KTKE 101.5 Black Box Party

This afternoon, KTKE 101.5 FM celebrated their listeners with the “Endless Summer” party at Common’s Beach.  The title was a bit ironic since the temperature high today was 50 degrees.  Throughout the summer, 100 lucky listeners won keys to try to open the Big Black Box for a prize of $3000.

Despite the cool temperatures, 89 of the 100 key winner plus guests, friends and families gathered at Common’s Beach to enjoy a free lunch provided by Smokey’s Kitchen.  Food options included hamburgers, hotdog, pulled pork and pulled chicken, with sides of potato salad and cole slaw.

After lunch and a brief introduction of each of the radio hosts, all key winners gathered on the beach to try their luck at the Big Black Box.  All non-money winners still received consolation prizes of ice scrapers, candy and flashlights from The Auto & Tire Doctor.  Due to the cold weather and wind, I did not stay to find out the winner, but I will post once I find out.

HOT August Nights?!?

Although August is usually quite warm in the Reno-Tahoe area, for some reason, this August just cooled down in a major way.  Wednesday was 75 degrees, and then Thursday, the temps dropped to 50 degrees, and it started to rain.  It has now rained at least 9 or 10 times this summer which is good for the lake and the forests, but also extremely rare for this area.  For some reason, the inclement weather always seems to appear when I have a fun outdoor activity planned.

This weekend is Hot August Nights in Reno, where the temperature has also dropped off.  I find it pretty humorous that it’s called Hot August Nights, and yet it’s cooler here then in most of the nation.  The forecast says the sunshine should be coming back around this weekend, so we’ll hope for the best.  And if it rains, then maybe I’ll go to the movies…

LEARN MORE ABOUT… HOT AUGUST NIGHTS

The Housing Dilemma – Xii

We’re supposed to move out of our abode in Incline Village at the end of August.  I want to, really.  The problem is that every single place that I have found on c-list.org and taken a look at has been absolutely wrong for the amount they are trying to charge.  How can a room that’s the size of my cubicle with floor heaters (we know that is NOT efficient) and the smallest fridge and oldest stove EVER costs $650 plus utilities which will probably wind up costing at least $800 in the winter.  I mean even in 1970 you know this place was not that nice, so how in 2009 are they even going to try to charge that much money.   Lake Tahoe is a beautiful setting, but everyone knows that it’s not that easy to get a good job here, so who’s supposed to be able to pay that much rent for a dirty old-school studio?

Now, we move onto two bedrooms.  My one current roommate and I have considered sticking together in search of a 2BR, but these are few and far between to begin with.  When I do find one that is less than $1200, I take a look at it.  So far, I have seen two places that don’t seem too much bigger than a studio, and $975 seems a decent deal for 2, until you add on the electric, gas, water, cable, internet, and he even wanted me to use the snow blower to plow myself out of the driveway?? I think not, good sir, I think not.

So herein, lies the dang dilemma – all the affordable places that I have seen listed that look halfway decent – they are probably still old, old buildings from the 60s and 70s, but at least someone has taken a few dollars to fix the place up a bit to modern circumstances, are located in either Reno or Incline Village, with maybe a few spattered up in the very top of Tahoe Donner, leaving me with the minimum commute to work in Tahoe City of 30 minutes.  So, what is a girl supposed to do?

All I can figure right now is that I’ll continue to look on c-list and the newspaper and hope that by some miracle something semi-affordable and somewhat-modern will appear in the next month and 1/2.  And if not, then I may be forced to stick it out in Incline.  I enjoy for the most part Incline’s dining options and the grocery store there, the Raley’s, is by far the best in North Lake Tahoe, but still, it is a far drive to my workplace.

So, if anyone happens to read this blog and has a big heart and wants to rent a nice modernized one bedroom or studio to a very tidy and clean and responsible young gal, then please, please contact me.  I am also available for house sitting or care taking of your lakefront mansion on Lake Tahoe, so please feel free to email me as soon as possible.  Or, if anyone finds a place that seems cool, hook a sister up!

Thanks.

Traffical Nightmare

Yes, I made up a word – traffical – meaning a ton of traffic where you wonder if anyone is actually going anywhere.

Traffical nightmare pretty much defines the weeks surrounding the 4th of July in Lake Tahoe.  I wonder if anyone actually gets to experience anything while they vacation here, or if they end up just driving aimlessly around the Lake, getting stuck in one traffic jam after another.  At least it’s a pretty view.

I just really encourage people to not forget that they are on the road while driving.  Yes, there are other people on the road as well, and even though it’s a very spectacular view, the rules of the road do indeed still apply.  I also encourage locals to take a deep breath and count to three.  I mean yes, it is frustrating to have such serene scenic beauty for 50 weeks out of the year, but please let’s all try to keep it together during the busy times as well.  I mean does yelling obscenities out your car window really help the situation?

Finally, don’t forget about carpooling, the Tahoe Trolley, the TART bus and other forms of public transporation.  After all, we are trying to Keep Tahoe Blue.

A tour of the Tahoe City fish hatchery

This afternoon, I went on a “field trip” to the recently remodeled Tahoe City fish hatchery, currently run by UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.  The fish hatchery was built in 1920 by the California Department of Fish and Game.  After being fully operative for several years, the building was left to rot.  UC Davis acquired the building in the 1970s for a mere dollar, but still did not have the budget to repair the building which our tour guide Heather described as a mouse-infested, ant parasidic raccoon hideout.  She also told us about the adornment of spider webs and the foot of storm water in the outhouse.  Yuck!

In 2008, UC Davis began a major renovation of the building.  The new building looks great on the outside; they kept the historical qualities of the building by keeping a similar outer paneling of hardwood and paned windows, but pressure washed the entire inside of the building, repaired windows and generally cleaned up the place.  The new building is still in the process of being fully-functioning as budget cuts and political mayhem have caused delays in the process.

In the future, the building will operate as a lab for scientist to check specimen samples and perform water quality analysis of Lake Tahoe, contain a shower and scuba room, act as a environmental education center and storage for scientific research paraphernalia, as well as offices.

The out buildings include a garage for the research vessel.  Behind the garage and fish hatchery building lies an entire wetland area.  Heather told us that the area will be restored and a trail will be built to enhance the environmental awareness of this area.

She also informed us why Lake Tahoe is so blue… the lake is so clear that it absorbs the entire rainbow of light and reflects back the blue.  The often blue sky also helps the lake look even more blue.

If you are ever interested in learning more about the scientific and environmenatal qualities of Lake Tahoe, I highly recommend taking a tour of the Tahoe City fish hatchery and driving or biking to Incline Village to tour the LEED certified green building of the Tahoe Environmental Research Center.  The TERC is an awesome green building featuring a green tours, as well as an educational tour including a miniature version of the research vessel, a NASA exhibit and a 3D movie.

Major Snowfall

We had quite a bit of snow fall in the last few days.  I know there was at least 2 1/2 feet of snow on my deck (which I have not shoveled yet in order to keep a good tally)!  The mountains are reporting that they received over 3 feet at higher elevations!  Awesome!  Get our your gear locals and visitors, it’s time to go riding!

I may wait until after the holiday to get my first turns as I am guessing that the base is not quite where we need it to be yet.  This snow if very light; I shoveled my stairs in 5 minutes.  It is purely fluff, so your skis and snowboards mays sink right down to the dirt.  In other words to the wise, stay on the groomers until the base gets thicker.

Fortunately, we have more snow in the forecast!

Umm… did someone say SNOW?

Yes, it’s December 9th, 2008, and we are still waiting for the first major dump (of snow) for the season.  Some of the mountains are open with small strips of machine-blown snow.  Some of my friends have hiked up to higher elevations to find patches of nature-made snow.  I am still waiting until the first major snow.

I have my gear ready to go.  This year, I purchased a new Burton snowboard jacket, and as luck would have it, found a perfectly matching bright green ProTec helmet at the ski shop, Porter’s Essentials, downstairs from my office.  I also got some new Nidecker boots from my friend since I am helping him edit his first book.  I put on all my gear – maybe, just maybe that will lure our snow gods?

Well I just checked our NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) – they usally are pretty accurate, and here is the latest weather report for North Lake Tahoe (Tahoe City/Dollar Hill):

Friday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26.

Saturday: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28.

Saturday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Sunday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 24.

Sunday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14.

Monday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 27.

Monday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 12.

A chance?  A chance?  Well, let’s keep our heads up North Lake Tahoe-ians!
